The next generation (5G) communication system has to surpass the previous generations in regards to the offered rate and achievable capacity with improved latency and energy efficiency. It also needs to address different applications such as machine-type communication (MTC) or internet of things (IoT). In the recent years IoT has revolutionized sensor based applications in many domains such as manufacturing, agriculture, smart metering, smart building and cities and intelligent transport systems. In this project the student investigates the wireless communications and the network infrastructure that support the IoT platform. In particular the access strategies, transmission strategies, scheduling strategies and network control and management strategies are to be investigated along with meeting the energy efficiency, throughput and latency requirements set by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) vision for 5G communication. The technologies of consideration are the 3GPP based NB-IoT technology, LoRA WAN technology and possible satellite communications technology. The application areas for the research may depend on any particular research projects that are running at the time and could range from buildings and infrastructure, automotive to smart metering. The prospective student is expected to have a solid academic and practical background in wireless communications, mathematical analysis, and also good software skills for simulating communication systems.
