California State University Opioid Crisis Modeling Method Paper For your midterm paper, you will describe a potential technology, software, or modeling method you are interested in creating through a hackathon project.

Students are expected to come up with their own ideas for the midterm paper, even if they already have a group for the hackathon. It is not necessary to follow through with your midterm idea in the hackathon itself.

Midterms grades will be released before the hackathon, along with individual feedback. We hope the feedback will be useful for your hackathon experience.

The project must be related to the opioid crisis. If you plan to attend an alternative hackathon event, your midterm paper can focus on a different topic within health informactis.

Project:

Aim for a realistic hackathon project, that can be completed within 20 – 24 hours by a group of 3 – 5 people. Focus on a specific narrow problem related to the opioid crisis. And be creative!

Problem examples: reducing opioid prescriptions, helping patients manage pain, predicting individuals at risk, etc.

Modeling examples: using social media data, using search engine data (Links to an external site.), etc

Software examples: mobile app for patients, EHR plugin for doctors, etc.

Paper structure:

Problem statement: Describe what you want to do in the project and what problem it is trying to solve. Be specific.

Background/significance: Why is it important? Use academic sources and numbers to support your argument.

Innovation: What solutions already exist for this problem? Why are they not enough?

Team members needed for the project: For example – 2 people with public health knowledge, 1 designer, 1 person with experience in statistics. Explain why. Also describe your own background and how it will be an asset to the team.

Description of technology/modeling approach: Describe what you you do, including what you aim to accomplish and how. Explain the tools you will need to use in detail.

Implementation barriers and ways to address them: What challenges can you anticipate might arise when working on this project? How might you prevent or address them?

Formatting: 4.5 to 6 pages, single spaced, 11-point Arial font. Note that although there is no minimum length, each section shorter than half a page most likely will not be detailed enough.

Sources: you must include at least 8 academic references in the background/significance section. The innovation section also should include references to academic papers or links to existing products. Please use APA or MLA format.
