Glendale Community College Traveling Through the Dark Poem Explication Essay So today I had an in class essay i bombed. My prof is letting me revise it. I don’t have it back yet but id like to ask the question early so you could have more time to deliver a perfectly crafted essay. It needs to be original, NO PLAGIARISM! Please don’t use words a regular college student wouldn’t use. I really need an A paper but i don’t want it obvious i got a tutor. Follow the rubric like a bible. The questions to consider aren’t extremely important, but are more of a guide. You do not need to answer all of them because I’m asking for a poetry explication with a strong stance of interpretation. Please out deliver, I will be a repeat customer if I like your work. Ask me as many questions as necessary, I just need your help. Traveling through the Dark
BY WILLIAM E. STAFFORD
Traveling through the dark I found a deer
dead on the edge of the Wilson River road.
It is usually best to roll them into the canyon:
that road is narrow; to swerve might make more dead.
By glow of the tail-light I stumbled back of the car
and stood by the heap, a doe, a recent killing;
she had stiffened already, almost cold.
I dragged her off; she was large in the belly.
My fingers touching her side brought me the reason-
her side was warm; her fawn lay there waiting,
alive, still, never to be born.
Beside that mountain road I hesitated.
The car aimed ahead its lowered parking lights;
under the hood purred the steady engine.
I stood in the glare of the warm exhaust turning red;
around our group I could hear the wilderness listen.
I thought hard for us all–my only swerving-,
then pushed her over the edge into the river.

Questions to Consider:
1. Why does does the speaker pull over to the side of the road? What does his decision to
stop at night on this road suggest about the kind of person he is?
2. What does the speaker plan to do? What surprise does he find? How does the surprise
interfere with his plan? What do you think he might be considering doing instead?
3. The speaker refers to the deer in different ways in stanzas 2 and 3, and in stanza 4, he
refers to the deer and her baby as “our group.” What do these word choices suggest
about his feelings at the side of the road and the ways those feelings change?
4. In stanza 4, the speaker can hear the car running. What do you think hearing the car
running makes him want to do? How do you feel when you stop somewhere, expecting
to just be stopped a minute, and you can hear your car still running?
5. What do you think the speaker means when he says “thinking hard for us all” is his “only
swerving?” In what way was his thinking a “swerving?” How is his final decision
ironic?
