US HEALTHCARE SYSTEM
2
Abstract
The focus is on the cost, accessibility, and quality of the U.S. healthcare system. The
spending on the insurance of the U.S. is the most expensive compared to other countries, but the
quality is not as good as those countries. The U.S. has the highest technology for medical which
not for everyone to access. That led the country to have more unhealthy citizens since their
insurance could not cover those costs or they are not able to afford to have insurance.

Among the key issues facing the American citizens is the cost, accessibility and quality
of the American health system. It is a crucial concern for the policymakers due to the influence it
has on the national debt and economic efficiency (Emanuel, 2018). According to the
Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development’s (OECD) 2019 health statistics,
which is a credible source of statistics among the members, the U.S. devotes more of its national
income to the healthcare compared to other OECD members (Jha et al., 2019). The spending on
healthcare in the U.S. has risen from 16.4% of the GDP to 16.9% of the total GDP in 2018. This
stands to be the highest allocation to healthcare among the OECD members. The U.S. health care
system has been a subject of debate with many people urging the government to do something on
the rising cost of healthcare.
The prohibitive cost is one of the key hindrances to the access of healthcare. The
Americans who are below the average income are likely not to visit a healthcare center when
they are unwell. These group of citizens are not able to seek treatment are even seek prescription
when they are sick as they cannot afford (Bauchner & Fontanarosa, 2018). Most of the
physicians in the U.S. also acknowledge that most patients have a problem in paying for
healthcare services. A significant number of uninsured citizens have reported delaying or not
getting medical care at all due to the high cost involved.
Some of the reasons associated with the high cost of health in the US is the value of the
new technology and prescription drugs. The cost of adopting latest technology is high and this is
passed to the patients. Another reason advanced for the high cost in healthcare is the rise in the
number of chronic diseases, including obesity. Chronic diseases contribute to the high cost of
healthcare, especially during the near end of life care. The high price involved makes the
healthcare services on such conditions inaccessible especially to people with low income. On this

basis, the health experts are advising the focus to be shifted to preventive care so that the cost of
the healthcare-associated with chronic diseases can be reduced. The cost of administration in the
health care is also high. Some health administrative functions are done by public bodies while
others are in the private sector. This is based on the fact that the government, in some cases,
outsources some healthcare administrative cost in the private sector (Kaplan et al., 2018). For
instance, some medical insurance schemes are managed by the private sector, making them
costly. This acts as a hindrance to their affordability and accessibility by the people whose
earnings are below average.
In terms of quality, the U.S. has some of the best medical specialists among the OECD
members. However, the treatment in inequitable, overspecialized and neglects the primary
aspects of the healthcare. In this regard, the approach to healthcare in the U.S. is poor compared
to most of the OECD members. The quality of healthcare in the U.S. is low because of
inefficiency and inequity. Most of the citizens live unhealthy lives, and the health system is
typically dysfunctional. The number of physicians is too compared to the population despite the
high budgetary allocation in healthcare. The costly healthcare system with the poor outcome has
continued to undermine the economic wellbeing of the country.

AUSTRALIA’S HEALTHCARE SYSTEM
Abstract
The paper analyzes the Australia’s healthcare system. The focus is on the cost,
accessibility, and quality of the healthcare system. An in-depth analysis of the various factors
that hinder and promote the deliverance of effective health care services in Australia is given.

AUSTRALIA’S HEALTHCARE SYSTEM
Australia’s Healthcare system
Australia’s health system is among the best worldwide. The system provides affordable,
quality, and safe health care to its citizens. The government jointly manages the health care system
at; state, local, and federal levels among others. Australia enjoys longest life expectancies as
compared to other countries. All this is subject to the affordable, quality, and accessible health
system. Australia has numerous health care providers. These include; general practitioners who
provide primary care, medical specialists, allied workers, and nurses.
Australia’s health care services are affordable. The public hospital system and Medicare
offer low-cost and free services to all Australians. Alternatively, private health insurance caters
for the outside public system patients. However, patients in the private health care contribute to
the cost of the services received (English, 2016). Medicare, Australia’s universal health care
scheme has been in operation since 1984. Medicare caters for all Australians, Australian residents,
New Zealand, and other citizens whose countries signed health care agreements.
Primarily, Australia’s health care is affordable due to Medicare. Medicare covers the full
cost of service incurred in public hospitals (Duckett, 2015). Additionally, it jointly covers other
health services like medical specialists, therapy, and some dental services. The cover also provides
pharmaceutical benefits scheme that might give medical prescription at cheaper and affordable
rates.
Australia’s health services are easily accessible. This is due to the joint management of the
system by the government. Thus, Australians can access the services at state, territorial, or local
level. For instance, Australia has primary health networks (PHNs) that coordinate and provide
health services in local villages (Henderson et al, 2018). On average, Australia has 31 PHNs that

work closely with health centers and other professionals in the delivery of patient care. Similarly,
the PHNs help in assessing the health needs of an area, provide extra services such as home care,
health promotion programs, and others (Henderson et al, 2018).
Moreover, Australia provides high quality health services. New developments in the health
research area and technology has greatly affected the quality of services. For instance, advances
in medical science provides better chances for diagnosis of diseases hence giving an upper hand
in prevention and treatment of such ailments. Australia’s investment in medical research and
acquisition of professional medical practitioners results in better quality of services.
In addition, technology has a substantial impact on the quality of services. The dawn of the
digital era has resulted in digital health and automated diagnostic services. Such systems help in
the diagnosis, treatment, control, and prevention of diseases. Consequently, the country achieves
a better health care system for its citizens. Use of management information systems in Australia
has enhanced use of health data (English, 2016). Comprehensive data drawn from different tests
and studies can inform policies, programs, and services. A link between various health systems in
the country positively influences decision-making and discovery of new patterns in the health
sector.
Australia’s health care system is complex. In 2017, the government spent approximately
$181 billion on health. This translates to 10% of GDP. However, Australia manages proper
funding for its health needs. Governmental, non-governmental, private insurers, among others
contribute vastly to health care funding. Control over the private insurers has established an
affordable cover for Australia thus reducing health care costs (Duckett, 2015). In conclusion,
Australia has a complex and admirable health system that enhances affordability, accessibility,
quality of health care services for its citizens.
