A. COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course is an overview of the earthly life, ministry, and teachings of Jesus Christ in
the four Gospels with special attention given to the chronological sequence of events. It is
designed to introduce the person and ministry of Jesus Christ to students.
B. COURSE OBJECTIVES
1. To present the unique biblical view of Jesus
2. To familiarize students with the background of the world in Jesus’ time: Jewish roots,
Geography, Roman Empire, Greek/Hellenistic culture, religious and political sects,
Israel’s struggle with sin and Jesus’ plan for salvation.
3. To give a sketch of the chronological narrative of Jesus’ life and ministry.
4. To introduce major themes in the Gospels.
5. To gain an overview of the major events in the life and ministry of Jesus.
6. To understand better the Gospels concerning the preaching and teaching ministry of
Jesus
7. To gain lessons from the life and ministry of Jesus that can apply to the student.
C. TEXTS
1. REQUIRED:
• Yancy, Philip. The Jesus I Never Knew Grand Rapids, MI: Zondervan, 1995,
book review due May 10
• A copy of the Holy Bible your choice translation. Professor uses New King James.
• Jesus Film (dvd or you tube), length a little over two hours. This film portrays the
life and ministry of Jesus in the Gospel of Luke. Send professor page 2 pages
of notes as evidence watching, answering three questions: What were some
reasons Jesus came to live and minister among us? What were some lessons
you learned from Jesus’ parables/stories? What sufferings did you observe
Jesus went through so we could find salvation in Christ? Due February 9
• Gospel of John (2003, Full Movie, about 3 hours on dvd or you tube). Send
professor 2 pages of notes in which you choose five characters in the book of
John and relate how Jesus related to them, what Jesus purpose was in his
encounter with these persons, and what lesson you understand Jesus was
teaching, Due April 12
• The Case for Christ, Lee Strobel (Movie On You Tube, 1 Hr. 11 Min), no paper
Note: The instructor will give students in class files handouts for required reading and a
bibliography for further optional reading.
