Chapter Version 1 Guidelines
Due Date: Thurs, April 9, 11 am — 200 points
The initial version of your chapter should not be a rough draft; rather, it should be as
complete and polished as you can make it. In addition to the specific guidelines listed
below, you should also review tips in Rampolla (esp Chap 4 – “Following Conventions
of Writing in History” and Chap 7 – “Quoting and Documenting Sources”), and two
handouts: “The Ten Commandments of Good Historical Writing” and “Characteristics of
a Successful History Chapter” (which I’ve attached to this assignment and are also
accessible via the Week 9 Module on Canvas). I will evaluate the first draft of your
chapter primarily (but not solely) on the Content criteria listed on the attached
feedback form. For the second/final draft, “Presentation” issues (the second section of
that form) will be the primary focus.
Basic Formatting Requirements:
Your chapter should be 16-20 double-spaced pages in length (not including the
bibliography), complete with footnotes (not endnotes) and a bibliography, both properly
formatted using Chicago Manual of Style citation guidelines. Double space the chapter
throughout, excluding block quotes (if any) and the footnotes, both of which should be
single spaced. Use 1” side margins, 1″ top and bottom margins, Times 12-point font for
the text, and Times 10-point font for the footnotes. Do not include a title page. Instead,
begin your chapter with your title (in bold) aligned on the left hand margin of the first
page, followed by your name on a new line (also in bold and aligned on the left margin).
Then start writing. Have your word processor insert page numbers on the upper right
hand of each page, except for the first one. Left justify your paper (and allow the word
processor to break the lines on the right side, as I have done in these guidelines).
Indent each new paragraph with a single tab. Your bibliography should begin on a new
page and be titled “Bibliography,” with separate headings for Primary and Secondary
sources.
Primary Sources, Secondary Sources, and Citations:
As we’ve talked about before, your chapter should not simply be a compilation of
secondary sources, but must critically engage with a sufficient number and appropriate
range of primary sources. In other words, the primary sources must drive your story and
provide the foundation for your historical narrative. A reminder that a satisfactory
chapter will generally be based on a minimum of 20 primary sources from 3 distinct
primary source collections (an excellent chapter will often have many more than that).
Sketch in the broader context for the events you are discussing with an adequate
number and variety of relevant and reliable secondary sources, some of which should
be fairly recent. Again, a satisfactory chapter will generally have a minimum of 8-10
secondary sources, but excellent papers often have many more than that.
Throughout your paper, you should offer insightful and in-depth analysis of your
sources. Any sources you rely on to write your paper, whether directly quoted,
paraphrased, or summarized, should be properly cited in the footnotes and bibliography.
Avoid the temptation to use too many quotations, especially long quotations or block
quotations (which should only appear once or twice in the chapter, if at all).

Organization:
Your paper should have a strong introduction (generally about 1-1/2 to 2 pages) that
presents your general topic and thesis (the main argument of your paper) and indicates
why your research is significant (answers the “So what?” question), including a brief
discussion of any previous research related to the topic (the historiography). Choose a
first sentence with “punch” (the “hook”), one that makes the reader want to keep
reading. The thesis is generally the last sentence of the introduction, and you should
highlight it with an appropriate signal phrase, such as “This chapter argues. . .” or “In
this chapter, I argue. . .” or something similar. For your chapter drafts, highlight your
research question and your argument/thesis statement in yellow using the Word
highlighter tool. You should develop and support your thesis in the body of the
chapter using specific examples and evidence. The paper should end with a
strong conclusion (usually about a 1 to 1-1/2 pages) that restates your thesis in some
form and forcefully and effectively brings your essay to a close.
Make sure to follow and utilize the question-based outline you created (and perhaps
have revised) for your chapter. Choose an organizational structure for the body of your
paper—chronological, thematic, or some combination of the two—that effectively
supports your thesis and present your material in a logical order. However you decide
to organize your paper, you MUST submit a full question-based outline along with
your First Chapter Draft.
Audience:
Write for a general and intelligent audience, not a specialist in the field. Among other
things, this means you should establish adequate context for your paper (especially in
the first section of your paper after the introduction, ca. 2 pp. or so), and not assume the
reader is familiar with the historical events, places, and ideas you discuss. Upon first
mention a person or organization, provide the full name and properly identify
him/her/them (e.g., “Bill Jones, an outspoken Republican who served six terms in the
U.S. House of Representatives,…”). From that point on, refer to that person by their last
name, and use acronyms to refer to organizations (unless many pages have elapsed
since you first identified them).
Presentation:
Each of your paragraphs should be tightly focused, smoothly and logically flowing, of
appropriate length, and introduced with a proper topic sentence. In general,
paragraphs less than 3 sentences long or longer than about 2/3 page should be
avoided. For your chapter drafts, underline each and every topic and closing
sentence. Use appropriate transitions between paragraphs and sections of your paper.
Use direct quotes to illustrate key points, make sure that they are introduced or framed
with proper signal phrases, and that they are incorporated in such a way as not to break
the flow of your language or logic. Quotes should generally not be longer than 1-2 lines
in length. ANY material you rely on to write your paper, whether directly quoted or
paraphrased or summarized, must be properly cited in the footnotes and bibliography.
Remember, you can never have too many footnotes.

There are several other presentation issues to keep in mind:
1. Avoid use of the passive voice, which weakens your prose and hides agency.
2. Strive to vary word choice and sentence structure. Balance longer, more complex
sentences with shorter, simpler sentences, and avoid repetitive constructions (e.g.,
sentences that consistently begin with the subject and then the verb). Favor complex
sentences (e.g., After calling his boss to tell her he was sick, the man went back to
bed.”) over compound sentences (e.g., The man called his boss to tell her he was sick,
and he went back to bed.”) In this and other ways, strive to create lively and engaging
prose.
3. Support your assertions with persuasive and well-chosen specific examples.
4. Adopt a professional tone, which means, among other things, avoiding
colloquialisms, contractions, slang, and other informal constructions.
5. Avoid unnecessarily wordy constructions.
6. Check for proper spelling, grammar, usage, and mechanics not only by using your
word processor’s spell/grammar checker but also with your own eyes.
7. Carefully proofread your paper to avoid careless errors.
Final Reminders:
Strive to make this first draft of your chapter as complete and polished as possible. For

1) include your title and your name on the first page
2) highlight your argument/thesis statement and research question in yellow
3) underline your topic and closing sentences

Women and the Second World War
The year 1917 saw the first woman enlist in military in the US. In what is widely
considered as a major leap in the history of women in employment, power, and military service,
this enlistment marked the beginning of a journey that led to the formulation of a 1948 law that
made the position of women in military permanent1. However, continued limitation in the
presence of women in the military in World War II accelerated a critical shortage in labor in the
US and other nations. The commitment of men in the military and the increased demand goods
and services in all levels of the supply chain “helped to efface the barriers to woman suffrage” by
allowing women to fill up these positions2.
Past and current literature suggests that the Second World War marked a turning point to
the role that women played in the military and society as well. Women had no chance of
enlisting in the military during World War I. During this period, their roles were limited to
homemaking and providing care for their children as their husbands took part in the military3.
Surprisingly, women suffrage continued during this period since they were underrepresented in
the workforce. Precisely, past studies document that women were segregated in paid work and
subjected to low wages, legal constraints, limited access to union membership, poor personnel
policies, and longer working hours4. The policies of the time further barred married women from
work. However, the labor shortage that arose following the mobilization of men during World
War II led to a rise in the number of women in labor from barely 32.5% in 1941 to more than
40% in 19445. While many employers and society were opposed to the idea of hiring women
both in civilian labor and in the military on the grounds that they were untrainable, women

proved competent from their ability to learn fast, low absenteeism, high motivation rats, and high
performance6. While others provided humanitarian support to the wounded men in the warzone,
others also provided the much-needed reinforcement to the already overwhelmed men.
This chapter is of great relevance to the study of women in World War II. In this case, it
provides a history of women in military work, and the progress that women achieved during
World War II, and the permanent changes that resulted from the war. This is an important lens
from which to study gender equality, the differences in wages between men and women, and the
poor representation of women in corporate and political leadership.
I will explore the history of women in military, which will help in understanding how
World War II changed their roles in civilian and military environments. My research will be
guided by the following research question: How did gender define the roles that women played
in the military during World War II? In this chapter, I argue that while gender discrimination
remained a social problem during World War II, enlisting women in faced new challenges that
would inspire future women.
