Objective: Write an email that persuades college students to purchase a franchise with another college student
(as business partners).
Assignment Details:
Write a message that targets university students (your classmates) and persuades them to think about
purchasing a franchise with you or another college student. You’ll find lots of information on-line about
the benefits of investing in and being a franchisee. Spend some time researching the topic and learning
about options before writing your email. You can target an investment in the Boston area, or your own
location. You do not need to find a specific franchise to buy (you can choose one if it helps you to
plan/outline/write). Be realistic (in other words, don’t propose buying a million-dollar franchise).
Part 1: Plan
Answer the questions in written form listed here to help you plan your request.
1. Why should this reader pay attention to your suggestion?
2. How will you get your reader’s attention when this is not something they have been thinking about?
(Both in the subject line and in the email itself).
3. What tone will you try to project in your email?
4. What rationale and logic do you think your audience will need?
5. What are your audience’s basic needs, and what benefits can you offer? (This should be easy to figure out
as the audience is you/your peers!)
6. What counterpoint(s) must you introduce?
7. Remember all the basic components of a persuasive message: clear intro, audience centric message,
persuasive argument (state the problem and give solution), evidence, negate the contra argument,
conclusion, etc.
8. Incorporate 3 of the 6 principles of the Science of Persuasion. Which ones did you use, and how have you

Ages ago, we college students have very limited options for running a business. Printing
university t-shirts, notes, or even selling cookies we baked by ourselves, just to satisfy our
financial needs.
However, with the increasing corporatization, franchises are becoming more and more open to
college students. In fact, in 2018, it is estimated that there are 759,200 franchise establishments
in the United States, outputting some 760 billion U.S. dollars and employing over eight million
people Business partnerships among college students are now getting a buzz, as it can help not
only on our financial independence but also on fostering our careers as young entrepreneurs.
In line of this, I am inviting you to join me on this growing number of student entrepreneurs!
We, as business partners, shall venture the exciting ways of business franchising. Just like an
internship, this would be a perfect opportunity for us to learn about the ways of the industry,
apply our management and logistics skills, and of course, enhance profit!
You might worry that this business venture will affect our academics as it will also consume
some of our time. But don’t you worry! That is why I am here. We can help each other and
