Post at least six sources in ASA format.

You will select a social movement to investigate and you will write an 8-12 page, double-spaced paper on that movement and then present it to the class at the end of the semester. For this assignment, you are required to have six-ten reputable sources on your social movement. Two of those sources should be peer-reviewed journal articles that you find from the Troy University databases that either deal directly with your movement or could be related to your movement in some way. One source can come from class readings. This may prove helpful for the theory section of your paper that is explained below. The other sources could be from popular press articles from credible publishers (e.g., New York Times Magazine,Rolling Stone, Newsweek, etc.) as well as from credible websites that explain more about your selected movement. When we have a Library Tour, the Social Science Librarian, can talk more about what are considered credible sources on the World Wide Web. I will also allow two of your sources to be video or audio based (e.g., documentary film or some type of news program like 60 Minutes, an NPR story) on your social movement.

You will also be selecting one of your sources to be read by your classmates and the professor before your presentation. In selecting that source, it should be a piece that will enliven your presentation because you will end your presentation with a discussion. Please do not use Wikipedia. However, you are allowed to find other sources that are referenced in a Wikipedia article about your social movement. Please use ASA format in the paper for in-paper citations and for the reference page.

In terms of how you will structure this paper, the paper must include the following four points:

1) An overview or brief history of the movement. This section should address all of these questions: Why did the movement come about? Which people or which groups started the movement? Are there specific organizations that are affiliated with the movement? What are or were some of the major events (i.e., protests, legislation, conferences, etc.) associated with the movement? What are or were some of the most common tactics or strategies employed by the movement? What degree of success was attained with these tactics or strategies? How has the movement been perceived by the public overall? (Here you can bring in public opinion poll data if you have it.) (Estimated length – 40% of total)

2) An explanation of the movement’s use of media or popular culture to disseminate their messages. This section should address all of these questions: Were or are protest songs used? Were or are documentary films used? If the movement is fairly current, what are some examples of its utilization of social media? Are there specific framing tactics that the movement used? (Estimated length – 30% of total)

3) A description of one or two theories that you think work well in explaining the emergence of your selected movement. (Here you can use an assigned reading in class that explains theory.) (Estimated length – 20% of total)

4) An overall discussion of whether or not the movement was successful. Why or why not? (Estimated length – 10%)

The estimated lengths are simply guesstimates. However, it does reflect the amount of emphasis I want you to put on the four, different points in your paper. Certainly, you must address all the questions I have under each point. In terms of incorporating answers to the questions, please make it flow seamlessly in the narrative. For example, do not write: “For the first question, the answer is _______.” Simply touch on all the questions I want answered in an organized and flowing manner.

I will be posting a comprehensive guide to ASA formatting for you to follow. One issue I do want you to keep mind is to keep quotes to a minimum. This paper should be mostly in your own words. Also, you must have a basic cover page and reference page. Please note that these pages do not count for your total page count. And I would ask that you insert page numbers in your document (on the lower right hand side).

You should submit by Turnitin a 4-5 page draft – on Friday, April 3rd. The draft should touch on all the four points. Therefore, you should have done all your research that will cover the four points by the end of October. If you have the whole paper done by then, I will certainly review whatever you submit.. The student presentations will begin on Monday – April 20th- April 22nd. The final paper will be due before midnight through Turnitin on Sunday, April 19th. Regarding late work for either the draft or the final paper, I will accept it, but please note that it will be marked a letter grade down for each class day it is late. The draft will count so please make the draft good.

For the final presentation you should present the answers to the four main points in your paper. The actual presentation time should be 8-12 minutes. The presentation should include at least 9 slides of a PowerPoint Presentation, 1 slide to introduce yourself and the movement and at least 2 slides for each of the four main points. Try and make the PowerPoint engaging (i.e., with interesting pictures and not too many words per side). You should also post your presentation to the Discussion Board before you present.
