WRIT 101 University at Buffalo Disadvantages of Artificial Intelligence Outweigh Its Advantages Essay Before now, you have pitched your research topic and have fully engaged in the research process by
completing an Annotated Bibliography. Now it is time to put together all the pieces and write a
Research Article. Your research focus will be on a current technology, its current effects, its overall
significance/impact, and connect it to a larger conversation (the so what? who cares? questions). The
main constraint is that your subject matter has to be something that is current, relevant, and urgent,
meaning that it should be of our moment (within past two years). This urgency in your subject matter
will help you write as you must consider how the argument you craft will add to the ongoing
conversation. Scholars write papers in order to contribute to their field, advancing knowledge and

Overview
Before now, you have pitched your research topic and have fully engaged in the research process by
completing an Annotated Bibliography.
Scholars write papers in order to contribute to their field, advancing knowledge and
understanding. Now, in your own paper, you will too.
A key aspect of a strong paper is that it illuminates a topic that is either not understood or
misunderstood. What are most people missing about the importance of an issue? Your job as the writer,
therefore, is to use your research and writing skills to educate, inform, and enlighten a general audience
about the topic and its significance. Research Articles typically show up in scholarly or academic
publications, so be sure to keep this is mind as you make decisions considering your audience, style,
tone, and voice.
As always, writing and research is a process. You’ve already started engaging in the research process
in your previous assignments. As part of the actual writing process for your paper, you will submit a
first draft (see course schedule for due date), participate in a peer workshop, work on revision, and then
submit your final draft. Please note that your first draft will be graded only for completion (part of your
class participation grade).
Purpose: to craft, research, develop, and revise a persuasive researched paper that puts forth and
supports a thought-provoking and ambitious argument.
Learning Outcomes:
We will be hitting all the learning outcomes in this assignment and its corresponding components
(the proposal and annotated bibliography). Here’s a (slightly) prioritized list of the outcomes:
Information Has a Life Cycle and Value.
Writing and Research Are Meta-Cognitive Processes.
Writing Requires Entering an Ongoing Conversation.
Structure, Style, and Mechanics Are Rhetorical.
Content
As mentioned, the topic of this paper is a current technology—you may interpret this in a variety of
ways, such as physical technologies (hardware) and digital technologies (software). I highly suggest
you choose something about which you are passionate and/or want to learn more. Feel free to tie-in
topics from your intended major or other classes (though if you choose to do the latter, make sure you
check with me first so we can make sure it abides by AU’s Academic Integrity Code).
WRIT 101
Professor Horne
That said, the main “heart” of your paper will address the larger implications of this current technology.
Why does it matter now? What is its impact? Where do you see this technology going in the future?
And perhaps most importantly, how does this connect to larger, urgent conversations today. For
example, so far, we have addressed larger privacy and security conversations in relationship to various
technologies. Like any good thesis, make sure that your argument is thought-provoking, specific,
arguable, and ambitious, yet manageable and focused. As some general possibilities, you may want to
consider: artificial intelligence, social media bots, algorithms, misinformation/disinformation
programs, propaganda machines, the Internet of Things, big data, digital surveillance, malware, 3D
printing, mobile applications.
Your paper should shed new insight on the topic and conversation. The goal of this paper is to
thoroughly investigate a topic and then to “put in your oar” by making and supporting an argument
that adds to the ongoing conversation. To be clear, this paper is not a report about a current topic nor
is it merely an explanation of your topic. Rather, I expect you to push your intellectual curiosity further,
think critically, make keen connections, and share sharp insights about what your topic is revealing
about the world we live in. In short, help your reader understand what this all really means in the grand
scheme of things. Why should we care? Why does this matter? Dig deep in your research and let it
guide your discoveries.
When you find a topic you want to address, the following questions may help you get started:
What have people previously discussed regarding your topic? Has anything changed?
What are the core points and controversies of your issue/topic?
What information will you find as evidence and research about this topic?
What do you need to define or explain to readers so they can understand the topic?
Do your sources agree or disagree about something? Is there something in between?
Given your personal perspective and your analysis of the topic, what do you think?
Why is this topic relevant and important? Why should my readers care?
Requirements and Format
Your Research Article should be no less than six pages and no more than eight pages. Your paper
should include all of the required elements and be formatted according to MLA guidelines. Your essay
should be double-spaced, have one-inch margins, and use a size 12 standard font. And of course, your
essay should be thoughtful, well researched, and persuasive.
Integrate and cite at least EIGHT credible sources–at least FOUR of which should be scholarly or
academic in nature.
Grading Information
The WSP grading rubric is posted to Blackboard. I suggest that as you work on your essay, and
especially during revision, you use this rubric as reference.

The Disadvantages of Artificial Intelligence Outweigh its Advantages
Floridi, Luciano. “What the Near Future of Artificial Intelligence Could Be.” The 2019 Yearbook
of the Digital Ethics Lab, 2020, pp. 127-142, doi:10.1007/s13347-019-00345-y.
This is a peer-reviewed scholarly source published with extensive research on the trends
of the artificial intelligence development process. Its author is a researcher based at the
University of Oxford and is an expert in this research field, as evidenced by numerous
publications. This source focuses on the development of artificial intelligence for use in future
activities. It begins by establishing that data is a vital component of existence in the world, and
the handing of the information is a necessary process. The difference between simple and
complex problems and artificial intelligence’s ability to deduce between the two is taken into
concern. The application of this source in the final paper is providing further understanding of
the basics of artificial intelligence and its different uses. AI can take over various tasks with
seamless integration but would be improbable to apply in others. The paper “Toward
understanding the impact of artificial intelligence on labor” by Frank., et al. presents supportive
ideas of the use of AI in the labor market, more so in the taking over of different tasks in the
labor market. A quote from the paper that would be put in the article is, “For the present purpose
the artificial intelligence problem is taken to be that of making a machine behave in ways that
would be called intelligent if a human were so behaving.”
Frank, Morgan R., et al. “Toward understanding the impact of artificial intelligence on
labor.” Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, vol. 116, no. 14, 2019,
pp. 6531-6539.
This is a peer-reviewed scholarly source presented by different US-based authors. The
large pool of authors for this paper ensures that its credibility and contributes to the
understanding that exists. The authors propose that AI has different impacts on the labor market.
It would work to supplement current work obligations, or could eventually replace them. The use
of AI in varied markets, including those that require high skill sets, affects labor dynamics. The
article proposes that AI will inevitably reshape the skill demands of different jobs. The
application of this source in the final paper will be based on the disadvantages of AI in labor
markets. The use of AI will lead to the replacement of certain markets, and this will change the
understanding that various parties have as they lead life. The potential of reshaping market
demands and replacing workers is a reality and disadvantage. This paper supplements “Air
Travelers Can’t See All of It, but More Tech Is Moving Them Along” by Julie Weed that focuses
on the increase in efficacy by the use of AI in human labor activities. A quote applicable in the
essay is, “Technology improves to make human labor more efficient, but large improvements
may yield deleterious effects for employment” since it adequately summarizes the contents of the
article.
Statista. “Artificial Intelligence (AI) Worldwide.” 3 Dec. 2019,
www.statista.com/topics/3104/artificial-intelligence-ai-worldwide/.
This is a statistical source that provides essential data on the market dynamics of artificial
intelligence. Statista effectively collects data globally, and this contributes to the credibility of
the information provided. This source offers data that there is a consistent increase in the demand
and application of AI across different nations. The projections for demand in the future would
result in higher results for the involved parties, and this would contribute to the success that they
accomplish. The source’s application in the paper is the showcasing of an increase in AI usage
globally. This source connects to “What the Near Future of Artificial Intelligence Could Be” by
Luciano Floridi. This source proposes an increase in the coverage of AI both presently and in the
future. A quote from this source that would be applicable in the paper is, “the applications for
artificial intelligence are effectively limitless, and this field of computer science is extremely
promising.”
Weed, Julie. “Air Travelers Can’t See All of It, but More Tech Is Moving Them Along.” The
New York Times, 26 Feb. 2020, www.nytimes.com/2020/02/25/business/artificialintelligence-airports.html
This is a popular source since it is a newspaper article published in the New York Times.
The author is a freelance writer who contributes to different established publications. The New
York Times is a credible popular source, and the credibility of this paper stems from its position
in society. The source focuses on how artificial intelligence is taking over operations at airports
through facial recognition and crowd management. The use of visual sensors and automatic
check-in kiosks in different airports globally is demonstrative of the changes brought by AI.
Artificial intelligence is also instrumental in the reduction of time spent by airplanes while
moving between various gates. The application of this source in the final paper will focus on
AI’s ability to improve on human performance. AI supplements the handling of different
functions, and will ultimately result in improved efficacy in various applications. This paper
connects to “How Artificial Intelligence Changes Us” by Robert C. Wolcott that highlights how
AI is taking over behind the scenes to change human interactions. An applicable quote from this
source is, “While humans can do each of these tasks, monitoring and analyzing the operations of
these various functions can speed the turnaround of the plane and prevent accidents.”
Wolcott, Robert C. “How Artificial Intelligence Changes Us.” Forbes,
www.forbes.com/sites/robertwolcott/2019/01/31/how-artificial-intelligence-changesus/#2f33ec874f18.
This is a popular newspaper article published in Forbes. The source’s credibility comes
from the impact of Forbes as a credible site, as well as the author’s versatility in technology. The
source focuses on the changes AI brings to its human creators and users. The improvements in
technology-aided by AI has increased the addiction levels associated with these platforms.
Artificial intelligence’s impact on the lives of individuals revolves around their need to
understand what is taking place and how best they should handle their challenges. The
application of this source in the paper will be based on the role of AI in changing human
behavior. Addiction to phones, as well as the focus to humanize AI, represent the most
significant challenges to AI’s impact on the lives of individuals. The ideas shared in this source
connect with those in “Air Travelers Can’t See All of It, but More Tech Is Moving Them Along”
by Julie Weed. They focus on the ability of AI to change us without our knowledge. A quote
from this source applicable in the final paper is, “In Virtual Reality games, brain imaging tests
suggest that encouraging players to ‘leap’ off a virtual ledge doesn’t just build players’ courage
(i.e., risky behavior). It also changes their brains.”
