During this semester I have seen several different plays. I noticed that when the actors
are performing on stage, different stage properties will bring different feelings and effects to
audience. I want to learn the importance of stage property in theater through this research.
First of all, what is stage properties? Stage property refers an object which is used on
the stage, during the performance. It can be anything in use or set up on the stage. But it is
different from the actors, costumes and lighting. Also, there are different types of stage props.
Such as the furniture, hand props, props of scenery and so on. These days, the stage props are
not only properties any more. They can be considered as a kind of art on the stage.
There are a lot of functions of stage props. The main function of stage function is to enhancing
audiences experience during the performance. However, they can also be divided into two
general categories: those serve the aesthetics deemed appropriate for the art of theatre in a
given culture, and those that optimize the experience of that art for the audience. Those
elements that serve the aesthetics of the art of theatre can involve everything from what the
performers need to reach the artistic standards deemed proper before a performance starts to
what they need to support the required amount of spectacle during performance, whether it be
a bare stage or a stage with enormous movable sets and a spectacular array of props
(Franklin).
