HIST410 UTHM George Washington’s Farewell Address in 1796 Paper Your formal paper for the semester will actually be written in 2 parts. The first part, due
23 September, will have you write about George Washington’s Farewell Address of 1796. You
are to explore what advice he provided in terms of foreign relations, and why he offered such
advice (What was happening internationally at the time that made him consider the issue? What
circumstances was the United States in?). This part should be 3-5 pages long.
You will hand this part in and have it graded as a regular paper with feedback. For the
second part you will build from your original paper (changing to reflect your feedback if
necessary) and consider whether the United States has followed George Washington’s advice in
the last 50 years (from the Cold War to the current period). This new part, too, should be 3-5
pages long, making a total paper of 6 – 10 pages. The complete paper is due 9 December.
Both parts must be typed, double-spaced, and must include citations even if you are only
using class materials (though outside, scholarly, materials are acceptable). Remember to cite all

George Washington’s Farewell Address in 1796
At the end of George Washington’s term, he decided that he was going to step
down from his position as president. He publishes the farewell address on a newspaper
instead of giving an actual speech on it in 1796. From his publication. of this decision,
he thought that he needs to give advice about politics in relations to what had been
happening throughout his administration over the previous terms.
He has addressed couple of the problems in the farewell address but there are
two key points that I would like to address in this paper, the first point is that United
States needs to stay out from the permanent alliances with any parts of the foreign
world. In the publication Washington has mentioned that “Permanent alliances”
became a principle of United States foreign policy. And emphasize that we need to be
against the permanent alliances. Washington agrees with alliances, but he has a
problem with the term permanent, by having the permanent alliances, it will create
troubles for United States political. Let’s an alliance country is doing what they are
supposed to be doing in 1750, however, their political has changed and started to do
something that they are not supposed to do in 1770. United States should not get too
close to any other foreign countries it will potentially forced commitment to another
country, which has the potential to be fighting for or against things that the United
States wasn’t planning to be involved with.
To elaborate on that, some permanent alliances country might be fighting with
other country, due to the permanent alliance’s relationship, although the United States
doesn’t want to be involved, it will be connected to the alliance country and be forced
to be part of the fight. Then, by having this permanent alliance prevents the United
States to stop the relationship with that country. And there were some political parties
in the United States argues that United States needs to be pursing a policy of
“isolationism” until the end of World War II. Because they don’t want to be connected
to some countries that aren’t doing the right thing.
Second point is criticizing the current United States political parties. For the
federalists, it was mostly led by merchants and bankers living primarily in the Northern
cities, it was favored a strong central government, and interprets the constitution
loosely that implied powers. For the federalist’s parties, it is generally favored toward
England, and majority of them favored Hamilton’s financial policies that supporting
the bank of U.S. Most importantly, the vision for United States is the country will be a
trade center, an industrial country that is self-sufficient.
For Democratic and republicans, it was majorly led by farmers and wage
earners living primarily in the South and West. That they are favoring toward to strong
state governments, not a central government. Democratic and republicans interpreted
the constitution strictly, which enumerated power. Interestingly, democratic and
republicans are generally favoring toward France. At the same time, democratic and
republicans are opposed Hamilton’s financial policies, which is against Bank of the
United States. Democratic and republicans also have a vision for the United States is
that the United States will be an agricultural society, only have a little portion of trade
and industrial components.
The reason why that George Washington pointed out the problem of political
parties is that he indicates that Americans should try to avoid letting the country to be
divided into factions over politics. United States will be a lot stronger when united.
Also, on the George Washington’s farewell address in 1796 also pointed out that the
presidency needs to be limited to two terms maximum.
