management. Often, one can form views about a company by looking at its capital
structure. This is because the capital structure of a company reflects its manager’s view
about the most appropriate source of financing for the company and how to use it in a most
efficient and effective way. This is indeed the nature of any companies’ operation in the
world.
Select a company listed on the Australian Securities Exchange and collect information about
its financial performance in the past Five years (from Jan 2014 to Dec 2018 inclusive). Apply
your own research and perform a thorough analysis for the company. In particular, focus on
the following questions in your report.
1) What is the capital structure of the company over the past 5 years?
2) Has the capital structure you identified been a static figure or a dynamic
process? Why?
3) What are the major corporate actions (i.e. investment decisions, financing
decisions and dividend decisions) made by the company that have affected the
company’s capital structure? What are the reasons for the company to take on
these actions and what are the consequences of these actions?
Please refer to the general marking guidelines (attached in the end) as you answer each
question.

Mandatory Requirements:
1. A synopsis of no more than 100 words is to preface the main report.
2. The maximum length of the essay is 5 pages. The maximum length limit does not
include the cover page, synopsis, reference list and any appendices if you choose to
have. Essays exceeding the page limit will be penalised at 10% per additional page.
3. The essay should have a normal margin (i.e. 2.54cm margin space for top, bottom
and sides), A4 sized, font type in Times New Roman and font size of 11, and single
line spacing. A 10% penalty applies for violation of the above presentation
requirement.
4. All reports must include a list of references.
All sourced material, including direct quotations, must be appropriately
acknowledged. Failure to do so will lead to an investigation of plagiarism by the
Business School and heavy penalty applies if confirmed.
5. Your final assignment will be assessed based on the quality of analysis and the
construction and presentation of your report (such as clear expression, logics and
coherence, etc.).
6. You should NOT use any standard cover sheet in the final version of the assignment
you submit. The cover page of your report should only contain the article title, your
name and full student ID. Failure to do so will result in a 10% penalty and delay in the
assessment process of your report.
