TRS3340 Virginia Commonwealth University Role of Spirituality in Healing Paper The outline for the Final paper is due next Monday, 10/7.
Here is the outline in brief. A full explanation is below this. I will say this a thousand time: THIS IS NOT A REPORT! Aim to write in the first person and share you ideas throughout. Quotes should always be introduced by you, and followed by your comments and examples. Unless it is an inset longer quote, you should never have a paragraph of all quotes! So the outline should be about your ideas, not just the quotes you will use.
Please also note Section Headers are in Bold, and subheadings are in italics. As always, this is too much to take in at once, so look at the specifics as you write.
Intro and thesis: 3-4 sentences in your own voice of lead in to your opinion based this of what you think and why. For the outline/intro assignment you need to offer a full intro and thesis.
Background: Offer one paragraph of what interests you personally on this topic. (For the outline you need only offer your topic sentence/first sentence for each heading and subheading.)
My Experience Talk about your own experience with the topic, no quotes.
Some Definitions You can quote some, but frame in your voice.
Issues Share what you see as major issues. Include some quote.
Analysis You may have 1 paragraph of introduction into your own points, but you may also just begin your points. (For the outline you need only offer your topic sentence/first sentence for our claims per point. You can mention who you will quote, and your example for the CER analysis paragraphs also.).
Point one (choose your own name)
Personal claim (no “People do this” but more “I find that…”

Reasoning and Example –
Note: For the outline do include the bullet points for claim/quote/reasoning and example. For the draft and final paper you of course remove the bullet points. Only headers and subheadings should remain.
Point Two (choose your own name)
Personal claim (no “People do this” but more “I find that…”
Quotes –
Reasoning and Example –
Point Three (choose your own name)
Personal claim (no “People do this” but more “I find that…”
Quotes –
Reasoning and Example –
Conclusion In your own voice, summarize your ideas and findings, then re-state the thesis in a new way. Don’t just repeat it. ( You might want to try a full conclusion now, but have at least the first sentence).

Topic: The Role of Spirituality in Healing
Thesis: I think that physicians should embrace the spirituality in the healing process, because
the spirituality involves compassionate care which is very essential to the recovery process of
any patient in their hands.

Intro and Thesis: For this spiritual and religious class, I have decided to consider the Holocaust and
spirituality further. After reviewing my resources, I believe that the Jewish held onto their spirituality
through writing, journaling, and diaries because there is evidence that even though writing was
prohibited and illegal for the Jewish community, they still wrote.
Background: Throughout this essay I hope to convey how important writing for the Jews was
during the Holocaust to keep their spirits alive. There are countless diaries, journals, and writings
that have been discovered from Holocaust survivors and people who did not survive. The
interesting thing that flows from them is they needed the writings to feel something. It was there
escape and it helped them to feel like Someone was listening.
My experience: There is nothing in my life that could ever come close to an experience
like the atrocities Hitler doted out. The only thing that I can relate to is being Native American.
And not so much as for me but as for my ancestors and my father. He was taken away from his
family in 5th grade and put into a Catholic boarding school. One of those schools you hear so
much about in history books where they were beat to speak their own language or to practice
their culture. My dad doesnt talk about it much because it was so horrible and he does not want
us to know about it. Due to that experience for him, it forced him to strive to make a better life
for us and to never want for what he did. He joined the Navy and became a Physician Assistant
and has given us a great life, along with my cousins who we adopted 31 years ago.
Some Definitions/Examples: The quote I am going to add here is important to what I
want to discuss in this essay because it is written in a diary from a Jew in the Warsaw Ghetto and
I hope it shows how important writing was to spirituality and freedom. The quote is from Janusz
Korczak, Ten oclock. Shots: two, several, two, one, several. Perhaps it is my own badly
blacked out window. But I do not stop writing. On the contrary: it sharpens (single shot) the
thought (175). The shot that takes a life fuels the writing that would recover a life. As the rifle
fires its bullets, the pen inscribes its words; the one metes out death while the other seeks out life.
Even when he has nothing to say, for the diarist the word is refuge. (Patterson, 42)
Basic Issues: The issues in what I am talking about is this is a touchy subject. There was
millions of Jews put to death. Speaking of spirituality and how some may have found the
teensiest bit of solace in the horrors that were all about. In one of the resources that I read states,
Schneiders defines biblical spirituality, secondly, as pattern of Christian life deeply imbued
with the spirituality(ies) of the Bible- a definition that can refer to an integrated contemporary
spirituality that is markedly biblical in character
. Given the inextricable union of the sacred
scriptures and Christian spirituality, then, one is prompted to ask: what sort of spirituality was
born during the biblical crisis of the Hitler era? I found this statement quite profound, it really
opens your mind up to think on that.
Analysis: In my point of view from the resources I read, two of them discussed the importance
of diaries for the victims of the Holocaust and maintaining their spirituality. The other resource
that I read discussed Christian Biblical Spiritualities During the Holocaust, this is a
controversial reading. It talks a lot about some beliefs that the Jews were punished for putting
Jesus on the cross. Others discussed how the Old Testament was based on Judaism and if the Old
Testament said this then why was the New Testament any different.
Point one: During the Holocaust victims imprisoned who wrote in diaries felt it was a
commandment from Him to get their word out. Like it was their duty. My statement does make
sense, in if they were to not survive at least they would have something left of them to pay it
forward to others.
Point two: Writing was a form of confessional to say, there was not many they could
talk to and many that would care. Writing in their diaries was a form of talking to someone,
something that would listen. From my readings it was said many times that despite the
consequences many of them wrote any way, even when there were others begging them not to. It
was a way to keep their spirit alive.
Point three: Christians, during World War II, learned to read the Bible in new ways
because of the horror of what Hitler was doing. They searched for some way to explain why he
was doing this and to find a way to back up the Jews and free them from this. This was in the
third resource I found. It was quite hard for me to read, it had a lot of good backings but there
was a lot of words I didnt understand. What I did get from it was there was a lot of people
across all religions looking to God for guidance of why Hitler was doing this and singling out
Jews. Challenged to respond to Hitlers persecution of the Jews and to the Nazi attempt to DeJudaicize the Bible. (Astell, 62)
Conclusion: I conclude from my readings that diaries, journalings, and writings were an escape
for many of the victims of the Holocaust. And by escaping to their writings kept their spirituality
alive. I never really noticed before I did this research, on how many diaries there really was out
there from the Holocaust. But as I delve into it more I realize there are countless amounts of
diaries from sufferers of the Holocaust. It makes sense to me now that it was a way for them to
escape every day and to keep their selves. Therefore, that is why I believe that the Jewish held
onto their spirituality through writing, journaling, and diaries because there is evidence that even
though writing was prohibited and illegal for the Jewish community, they still wrote.
