Southwest Airlines was created by herb Keller and Rollin King. They developed the
initial Southwest Airlines concept in a hotel bar in San Antonio, Texas (Southwest, n.d.). Their
original business plan consisted of a triangle drawn on a cocktail napkin—three lines connecting
Dallas, Houston and San Antonio (Southwest, n.d.). Initially their idea only worked well in
Texas because the federal government tightly controlled interstate air travel and they decided
which airlines flew where and at what price (Southwest, n.d.). That all changed when President
Jimmy Carter signed the Airline Deregulation Act into law which went into effect in 1979
(Southwest, n.d.). Today, 52 years later, Southwest Airlines has become the largest American
Airlines. Southwest Airlines not only delivers passengers but also delivers cargo and after 46
consecutive years of profitability Southwest Airlines’ annual revenue for 2018 was $21,965B
(Southwest, n.d.).
Southwest Airlines has a U-form organizational structure type (Sherman, 2019).
Southwest promotes centralized decision-making processes and they possess a rigid hierarchy
that addresses strategic management concerns (Sherman, 2019). The unitary or U-form structure
is also known as the functional form. This corporate structure is usually in businesses that
maintain strong central control via top-level strategic management at headquarters. The main
features of Southwest’s corporate structure are groups based on business functions specific to
commercial aviation and centralized hierarchy. Southwest groups business activities and
resources according to business functions (Sherman, 2019). The company has a functional group
for finance and one for daily operations in commercial aviation. Centralized hierarch is another
characteristic of the U-form organizational structure. The corporate structure’s relaying and
corresponding lines of authority are vertical starting from Southwest’s CEO, down to the rank-

and-file employees in daily operations (Sherman, 2019). Centralization ensures the fulfillment of
Southwest’s corporate vision and mission statements in terms of executive control (Sherman,
2019). This type of corporate structure aggregates expenditure and minimizes redundancies. This
helps contribute to the effectiveness of Southwest Airlines strategy and intensive growth
strategies in using low costs as the main bases for penetrating current markets (Sherman, 2019).
The growth history of Southwest Airlines begins in 1971 when Southwest Airlines had
three Boeing 737s and was serving three Texas cities—Houston, Dalla and San Antonio. In 1971
Southwest Airlines did not travel to other countries. By the end of 2018, however, Southwest
Airlines had decided to run international services to 14 destinations through 23 international
gateway cities within the 48 contiguous United States. Southwest Airlines Cargo also grew.
Southwest Airlines Cargo began shipping cargo to select international destinations. In 2019,
Southwest services 101 destinations and they have 768 Boeing Aircraft.
Primary contacts for Southwest Airlines are Gary Kelly, CEO and President and Julie
Weber, vice-president of People at Southwest Airlines. Two contacts to Julie Weber have been
made. The calls were inquiries about company polices.
Southwest Airlines have some issues that they are working out. Earlier this year
Southwest Airlines was having an “operational emergencies.” Southwest was grounding planes
because of mechanical problems which were unspecified mechanical issues (Schaper, 2019).
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has been conducting a detailed investigation
of Southwest’s handling of passenger bags. They believe Southwest has been underestimating
the number and weight of the bags. Preliminary quantitative techniques are surveys and online
polls. Progress is slow but steady. Specific next steps are; make one or two business decisions,
specify and articulate problems, and formulate quantitative analysis to address problems.
