1. Compare the three accounts of Jesuss baptism (Mark 1:9-11, Matt 3:13-17, and Luke 3:21-22). Read carefully. Give one
detail that is the same or similar among all three accounts. Next, for each of the three accounts give one detail that is
unique to that account.

Read Julie Galambush The Jewish World in the First Century CE from The Reluctant Parting (on Pilot as Galambush.pdf)
Galambush discusses the diversity of views within Judaism during the 1st century when the Jesus Movement emerged.
Pay particular attention to the expectations for the Messiah and the underlying apocalyptic worldview that framed views
of Rome.
Reflect on the ways in which Jesus fit into this first century context. How did he and his movement meet expectations for
the Messiah? In what ways did his followers need to rethink their expectations for the Messiah? How did this influence
the eventual development of Christianity as distinct from Judaism?
Reflection papers are designed to help you synthesize content discussed during the previous week of lectures. You will be given a reading
that is relevant to the topic we discussed along with some prompts to help get you started. If you are having difficulty following the prompts
or there is some other aspect of the topic that you would like to write about, feel free as long as you still meet the basic criteria in the rubric
below. Each reflection should be about 250 words (roughly one page double-spaced). This is not a research paper (no need for bibliography
or formal citation), but it should be written in a formal style.
Grading will follow a 10-pt scale based on the following rubric:
Grammar (3 pts):
Is the paper written in complete sentences?
With proper spelling?
With appropriate word choices?
Content (3 pts):
Does the paper use evidence from the reading?
Explained in the student’s own words?
Synthesized with original or creative ideas from previous knowledge?
Style (3 pts):
Does the paper flow naturally from one idea to the next?
Transition statements to show the logic of the argument?
Summary statements to make the main ideas obvious?
Final point (1 pt):
Was it an easy and interesting read?
