Now that you are familiar with experiments, quasi-experiments, and non-experiments, I would like you to think
about how each research design could be used in evaluation. The steps you take here will help you lay the
foundation for your final proposal. For more on this assignment, please see the documents linked on Moodle.
Step 1
The first thing you need to do is identify some potential variables. Think about variables or topics you have
personal and/or professional experience with that you might be interested in evaluating. Brainstorm related
variables and topics as I have in the table below. There is no wrong way to do this! Note: Please pick a
variable other than stress.

Step 2
What could be a general research question involving that variable? Don’t think about how you could
investigate it just yet, but instead focus on what question/s you might want to answer.
My example would be “How does stress affect motivation? Specifically, how does it affect academic

Do a literature review to investigate how others have studied this/these variable/s.
We’re going to use the PsycINFO database to get started, but you may also want to use JSTOR.

Select “P” and all the databases that begin with this letter will appear. (Alternatively choose J for

Use different keywords during your search (i.e., the related variables/topics you brainstormed in step one). You
may also want to play with limiting or narrowing your search. I recommend settling upon a keyword or
combination of keywords that give you 200 (plus or minus) search results. Anything larger will be a challenge
to sort through.
Write a brief description (3-4 paragraphs) about your search and what you found. Include the search terms you
used and how many “hits” came with each one. I’m interested in your research process and the outcome.
My example: I first used “stress” as a keyword and got 240,241 search results. Since this was too many
to start with, I entered “academic motivation” in the second search box under “stress” and got 176
search results. I read the abstracts of approximately 10 of the most relevant articles and learned (a
description of what I learned would follow).

Propose how each design could be used to answer your research question (keep things general as I have in the
example below) and type your answers into the boxes below.
