Your goal is to identify a community issue – think of it as a “problem” – and how it impacts particular sectors of
the community such as neighborhoods, socio-economic classes, racial or ethnic groups, etc. You’ll of course
need to consult so-called secondary sources such as publications, websites, broadcasts and the like – but you
should also try to dig deeper to recognize how a particular culture – the more local, the better – is affected by
the problem.
But wait, folks. There’s more! For this assignment you’re also asked to identify a particular person in the
community where you live is working diligently toward solution of the community problem. That individual
might be leader of a well-known organization or top public figure – or it may be a person who toils without
fanfare at ground level, so to speak. Again, this assignment asks that you explore beyond official bios or
published profiles – and try to gain additional insights about your “community hero.” It may be that you can
meet the person directly, but it can be just as useful to talk with associates of your subject or people who have
benefitted from her/his efforts.
So… there you have it. For this assignment in community engagement you’re asked to deal with both problem
and solution. And the “solution” is going to be a person who’s doing admirable work to help address the
community issue. It could be someone in government, health care, law enforcement, education, or other area
of endeavor – someone who seeks to improve the community by tackling the defined issue directly.
Your essay, then, will be in two parts: first you’ll define the problem and focus on its local impact; then
you’ll describe efforts of your individual “hero” in trying to improve our community. You’ll probably
need to display a degree of passion about both problem and solution in your research and writing.
You’re also likely to apply theories of communication learned in this course to what’s happening in the
community. Your described “hero” will probably be a quite good communicator. In your individual
presentation you’ll be able to pay tribute to that individual orally. (But that’s another assignment!)
Your essay will be graded on your ability to describe both “problem” and “solution” clearly and vividly.
You’ll also need to adhere to correct grammar, punctuation, and spelling. Although there is not a
specific length requirement, most should be able to address the assignment’s requirements in 3-4
pages (double-spaced). Be sure to cite secondary and primary sources appropriately. You may use
either MLA or APA format if one is preferred for your chosen or intended major.
