Here are the full, UPDATED guidelines for the presentation assignment
Chad 173: CLASS Observation Presentation (15 points); UPDATED 4/8/2020
Description:
You will create a slide presentation (7 slides) analyzing caregiver-child interactions in the context of toddler classroom observations. The analysis will emphasize (1) how the interactions illustrate five domains of development, and (2) the quality of care reflected within the interactions, based on the Toddler CLASS.
Objectives:
Reflect on the behaviors, interactions and activities observed in a toddler classroom context.
Relate observations of interactions between infant/toddlers and their caregivers to five major domains: emotional, social, language, physical, and cognitive.
Analyze the quality of care demonstrated by caregivers within these interactions, based on five dimensions from the Toddler CLASS Dimensions Guide.
Steps:
For this assignment, you will need to identify and analyze five caregiver-child (or caregiver-children) interactions. Each interaction will highlight one of the five domains of development (emotional, social, language, physical, cognitive) and one dimension of the Toddler CLASS (e.g., positive climate). For example, for the physical domain, you might analyze an interaction in which a caregiver and children engage in a gross-motor activity, including how it reflects a positive emotional climate. You will need to pay special attention to the caregivers responsiveness (or lack of responsiveness), emotional cues, scaffolding of child skills, and/or the communication between caregiver and child.
To identify interactions, view the following video clips, which are all based in toddler classrooms. You can use any of these videos to come up with your five examples. You do not need to use all of the videos. You can also use your detailed ITERS observation notes to identify examples of specific interactions.

UPDATE: Babydoll Circle Time (This video is not available. Optional – If you need additional videos to get more examples, you can also use the long video from the alternative ITERS assignment)
Create a slide presentation file (e.g., PowerPoint, Google Slides, Prezi). Choose a background design based on your preferences.
Slide 1: Include a project title and your name.
Slides 2-6: For each of the five interactions, create a slide that includes the following:
o A heading that identifies the relevant domain of development.
o An image from the Internet that represents the interaction.
o Bullet-points that summarize the following information:
Report: Report the setting and the materials available, and specific child (or childrens) and caregiver behaviors that occurred.
Domain: Explain how the observation relates to the childs domain of development. For example, did the interaction challenge the child in that domain? Did the materials support the building or practicing of skills in that domain? Did the child demonstrate competence in the domain?
CLASS: Describe how specific caregiver behaviors during the interaction relate to the indicators of a caregiving dimension from the Toddler CLASS Dimensions Guide (e.g., Teacher Sensitivity, Quality of Feedback). Did the interaction meet the level of high quality described in the dimension guide, or did it fall short in some way? Remember to emphasize the caregivers behavior, rather than the childs skills, in this part of your analysis. Each interaction should be linked to a different CLASS Dimension, so that five dimensions are covered across the presentation.
Slide 7: List the website URL for each image and observation video used in the presentation.
Submission:
Submit your presentation to Canvas by the due date/time. We will no longer be sharing the presentations in class.
Scoring:
The scoring will be based on the following criteria:
Descriptions of observations are clear and specific, and supported by images. (4 points)
Examples accurately relate to the domains of development (emotional, social, language, physical, cognitive). All five domains are represented. (4 points)
Analysis of interaction quality is linked to the CLASS dimensions guide, with relevant and specific examples of caregiver behaviors. There is an explanation for whether the interaction reflects high quality or falls short. Five dimensions are used across the five analyses. (4 points)
Image and video links are all listed on the final slide. (1 point)
Production and writing quality. The slides are easy to read and not overly cluttered with text/graphics, and free from spelling errors and typos. (2 points) Emotion
Report:
Girl climbed on a slide outdoors, smiling and laughing. She fell and
started to cry.
Caregiver picked her up, and asked in a soothing voice, Are you sad
because you fell?
Child calmed down. Caregiver put her down and child went back to
playing on the slide.
Domain:
This experience emotionally challenged the child. She got upset and
then had to regulate her negative emotion.
CLASS: Teacher Sensitivity
The interaction demonstrated high quality
Caregiver was aware of the childs need for support and
acknowledged the childs emotions.
The child was comforted by the caregiver and was quickly able to
return to playing.
