The Role of Fluency within the 5 Major Components of Literacy
▪ Phonics Awareness-“is the knowledge that words are made up of a combination of
individual sounds.” (“National Reading Panel: Five Components of Reading
Instruction Frequently Asked Questions,” n.d.)
▪ Phonics- “the system of relationships between letters and sounds in a language.”
(PBS Parents, 2017)
▪ Fluency- is “the ability to read with speed, accuracy, and proper expression.
(Reading Rockets, 2017)
▪ Vocabulary- words of a language.
▪ Comprehension- “is the complex cognitive process readers use to understand what
they have read.” (Read Naturally, 2017)
What is Fluency?
▪ “Fluency is the ability to read text with speed, accuracy, and proper expression.
▪ Fluency generally includes the following three components:
▪ 1.
Accuracy, sometimes called automaticity;
▪ 2.
Rate, or the speed a student reads; and
▪ 3.
Prosody, or the ability to read with feeling.” (GCU, 2014)
How is Fluency’s Connected to the Other Areas of Reading?
Research Based Strategy for Improving Fluency #1
Model Fluent ReadingThe teacher can show how to read fluently
by reading to the students. She shows
how fluent reading sounds like. When
reading make sure you express your voice
in the way the text means it to sound like.
After modeling it have the student reread
the text. Have other adults, such as
parents and anyone involved in the child’s
life, do the same with the child.

Choral ReadingWhen choral reading the teacher gives a
copy of the text they are about to read to
each student. The students read along with
the teacher as they read the text. Make sure
you pick a book hat is at their level and not
to long. You first read the book outload to
the students to model the fluency then ask
the students to join along with you as you
read it together. You should do this three to
four times. By that time the students should
be able to read it independently.

in a class – Google Search,” n.d.)

What Can Teachers Do to Support Fluency Development for
EL/SPED Populations?
▪ Teachers can have a word wall to promote word awareness. Having words displayed
all around the room help children recognize words that are being taught to them.
