I’m trying to study for my Social Science course and I need some help to understand this question.

Part 1

1: Based on what you read in Unit 1: Module 1(attacthed file), in a few sentences define text, context, and subtext in relation to each other and their importance to the humanities.

2: Pick a song and label it in terms of text, context and subtext. Of course, we can do this with any type of art or historical piece, but for this let’s keep it simple: just choose a song.

A brief example might look like this:

Text: (title, author of song, and lyrics) “For What It’s Worth” by Buffalo Springfield

There’s something happening here
What it is ain’t exactly clear
There’s a man with a gun over there
Telling me I got to beware

I think it’s time we stop, children, what’s that sound
Everybody look what’s going down

Context: (historical background) Released in 1967. Lyndon B. Johnson president of America. Vietnam War era America. The Baby Boomer Generation was largely divided in America. Many served in the Vietnam war, and just as many protested it and were labeled “Hippies.” Their more conservative parents who came of age in the 50’s were in support of the war.

Subtext: (what I think the hidden messages are based on evidence from the art, in this case lyrics) The song is a response to America involved in the Vietnam War and the thousands of Americans that were against and protested that war. The “man with the gun” could be a soldier in Vietnam or a police officer fighting protesters in America. The “children” are those divided Baby Boomers, America’s youth that Buffalo Springfield is calling to pay attention to what’s going on politically in our country.

1. Based on the ancient hieroglyphs shown in the Module, what can you infer was important to their cultures?

2. Based on the emoji’s on your phone, what can you tell is important to our culture?

3. What are the similarities and the differences between our use of symbols for words and those of the ancient world?

4. Explain how ancient hieroglyphs are considered more complex than “just a picture” or symbol.

5. Explain how modern emoji’s are increasingly becoming more complex. (think big, media, advertizing, movies, think globally)
