Directions for Reflective Essay

After completing your community service, you’re required to write a “reflective essay” analyzing your experiences in light of the ethical concepts, theories, and practices studied in the course materials (assigned readings, lectures, and discussions). Use the materials collected in your service learning portfolio and your homework questions as building blocks for reflection and analysis.

Be sure to write primarily about ETHICS—NOT service. Also, your essay must employ explicit references to at least two of the required readings in the course. Take care not to simply parrot back what other authoritative and scholarly sources have said about morality. Include some original thinking, analysis, and evaluation of these views about what it means to be and to act morally good. Credit will be subtracted from essays that fail to do this.

Length

Not counting the header, headlines, and list of works cited, your essay should be no less than 800 words.

Format

Follow the conventions of formal writing using MLA (Modern Language Association) format. Use a standard 12 point font, e.g., Times New Roman or Ariel. Use parenthetical citations to document ideas and material borrowed from other sources. Include a list of works cited. Carefully structure your essay with an introduction, a body, and a conclusion. Divide these sections of your essay with explicit headlines.

Your introduction must contain a thesis statement, a rationale for your thesis, and a plan of action.

The body of your essay must address three questions. 1) What does it mean to be morally good? How is it related to community service? Here, you want to analyze and evaluate what the scholarly, authoritative sources have to say about morality and how that relates (or not) to acting for the greater good through service. 2) What was your community service like? 3) How did your study of ethics and service experiences contribute to (or fail to contribute to) the view of morality you presented in response to the first question?

In other words, what did you learn about morality from the course materials and from your service learning experiences? What’s the moral of the story of ethics and service for you? Did your understanding of morality grow or alter as you engaged in service to others in the community? How? Did the study of ethics and the experience of community service challenge you to think about morality differently? Explain. Did community service teach you something about your own and others’ moral character and conduct, your own and others’ personal and social values, and/or your own and others’ moral responsibilities as members of our community? How did performing community service change your awareness of and concern for what is at stake in promoting the good life for ourselves and for others? After performing community service and seeing first hand the legitimate needs of vulnerable people, did you come away with any ideas about what should be done—on an individual and/or social level—to promote greater human well-being and virtue?

Conclude your essay by summing up the gist of what you’ve said. What are your conclusions?
