Refer to the Kairos website. How does the rhetoric of President Bush and Osama Bin Laden mimic one another, and how does it differ? In this next section of Between the World and Me, Coates writes to his son about slavery, about the difficult relationship he has with the police, and about his friend Prince Jones, who was shot and killed by an undercover Prince George’s (MD) County officer. Then, Coates tells his son that they moved to New York City just two months before September 11, 2001.
Coates’s reaction to the attacks of 9/11 was different than those of most Americans. While most people were grieving, Coates tells his son, “[L]ooking out upon the ruins of America, my heart was cold. I had disasters all my own.” (86)
