Proposal/Research Essay Rubric
Professor Hollis
10/25/2019
Introduction:
Opens with a few sentences that introduce the topic or issue to be discussed, providing context
for the argument/proposal and engaging the reader (the “Hook”.) For a proposal paper the
introduction should give some background on the problem or issue and/or define and
summarize the problem in question and which your proposal will address.
Proceeds from general to specific (Inverse Pyramid).
Concludes in a strong, focused thesis statement (Claiin + Reason) that makes a supportable
claim, identifies and proposes a solution to a problem, takes a stance on a debatable issue, or
offers an interpretation or judgment/analysis of the text that will be argued in the essay:
(Sample argumentative thesis:) “Because the polygraph has not been proven reliable even
under controlled conditions, its use by private employers should be banned.” /For a Proposal
Essay: Your thesis should state your solution to the problem outlined in your introduction and
why/how your proposal will be effective. Sample Proposal Essay Thesis: Due to the recent rise
in gun violence, Florida State Legislature should consider extending the wait period required for
purchasing a hand gun in order to allow gun sellers the time to perform more thorough
background checks on gun purchasers. Moreover, the State should perform random inspections
on gun sellers to insure they are doing their due diligence in performing these background
checks and that the laws are properly enforced. (The rest of the essay should then go on to
show not only why the proposal is an effective one, but detail how the proposal should be put
into effect and work to solve the problem/improve the situation at issue with the
resources/funds available or how such resources will be obtained (feasibility), while also
addressing any potential opposition – your primary audience: those you are trying to convince,
and whose values you must always be mindful of in order to demonstrate not only why the
proposal will effectively solve the issue at large but also benefit them (ethos).)
Body Paragraphs:
A topic sentence (a one sentence summary of the paragraph’s main points – alerts the reader to
what the remainder of the paragraph will be about) that points back to the thesis as well as
toward what is to come in the rest of the paragraph. In an argumentative/proposal essay, the
topic sentence is usually a secondary claim focusing on one particular aspect of your
thesis/argument. (May be implied)
Well integrated quotations and specific examples that support your topic sentence (Evidence).
Sentences and examples in your body paragraph must support your topic sentence.
Sentences that do not support your topic sentence disrupt the unity and coherency of
your paragraph and should be removed or relocated.
o Body Paragraphs must be well developed and contain sufficient, relevant, concrete, and
specific examples and reasons to adequately support your topic sentence. In an
argumentative proposal essay: your support will generally be comprised of logical

reasoning and examples showing why/how your solution will work as well as prove its
feasibility, making use of the rhetorical appeals to persuade its audience to act.
Moreover, when quoting directly from a textual source, be sure to correctly introduce
your examples using appropriate signal phrases (ie. As John Smith, Harvard University
Professor of Food Science, notes in his essay “Obesity and Youth Today”….) as well as
cite your source using correct MLA format.
Avoid vague examples and “fuzzy,” imprecise, overgeneralized wording (For instance,
words such as “good,” “well done,” etc.) in favor of specific, direct reasoning and
explanation (i.e. Why is the support “good”? How, specifically, does it back up your
claim).
Uses Signal Phrases to effectively introduce and frame quotes
Your interpretation of the examples (Reasoning).
o Explicitly and specifically explains the significance of your examples and how they
support your topic sentence and thesis: illustrates the thinking process you use to
connect the evidence to your claims, and thus directly demonstrating your critical
thinking skills. (What is significance of your support to your claim/topic sentence? How
do your examples directly support your argument?)
Makes effective use of transitions to show relationship between ideas; links ideas within and
between paragraphs and improves paragraph flow (i.e. coherency) (See The Little Seagulls
Handbook pages 26-27 for a list of common transition words), permitting ideas to build off one
another in a logical fashion.
Makes logical connections between sentences and ideas
Demonstrates flow and coherency in language usage (Including proper grammar, formal diction,
smooth and adequate transitions between ideas, etc.).
Addresses opposing viewpoints while always being mindful to treat those views in a fair and
open-minded fashion (i.e. through use of respectful, unbiased, neutral language, and well-
reasoned-evidence), demonstrates your trustworthiness as an author and that you have done
your research and considered all sides of the issues before putting forth your own suggestions.
Illustrates not only why the proposal will be effective, but that it is realistic/feasible and can be
put into action with the “resources available,” while also addressing any potential opposition.
Body paragraphs should be unified, coherent, and well developed
.
Conclusion:
.
Restates thesis and main points of essay (though without repeating the exact wording)
Ties together all the main points of essay and relates them to the essay’s topic
Does not introduce any new points or examples not previously discussed in body of essay
Relates your thesis to the overall issue at hand (the problem at issue and its impact on society in
a proposal essay) and makes a link outward, discussing its greater implications or significance to
society as a whole
Offers a recommendation for a course of action or a prediction for the future
Issues a call to action that provokes readers to take action to implement the claim put forth in
the essay (Proposal Argument)
