The discussion for this week is on the movie, “The Corporation.” The movie relies mostly on the conflict perspective and, among other ideas, argues about the devastating consequences the corporation has on everyday lives. The movie is very complex. (You are responsible for watching the first hour of the movie although, my recommendation is to watch the entire movie if time permits; it is very informative). It discusses the most important institution of our time – the corporation. In doing so, the movie labels the corporation as a pathological individual. It will be interesting to know whether you support or reject the conclusions the authors draw about corporations. As usual, here are some guideline questions.

1. Do you believe the corporation to be a psychopath? If so, should a psychopath be allowed to run the country?
2. Is there anything we can do to minimize its negative consequences on the poor of the world?

First off I have to say this documentary was very powerful and eye opening. I think most of us know that many corporations for years have been taking advantage of cheap labor and exploiting our Earths resources just to save money. Before watching the documentary, I was not aware that corporations were viewed as ‘persons’.This is very shocking to me. The check list in the documentary which included to further prove that corporations are psychopaths are: callous unconcern for the feelings of others, incapacity to maintain enduring relationships, reckless disregard for the safety of others, deceitfulness for profit, incapacity to experience guilt and failure to conform to social norms with respect to lawful behaviors. The definition of psychopath is, “a person having an egocentric and antisocial personality marked by a lack of remorse for one’s actions, an absence of empathy for others, and often criminal tendencies” according to Merriam-Webster dictionary. I believe that a corporation fits very well into that definition. A corporation does not care the harm it inflicts on individuals. It is very evident from the documentary that money is king, and it doesn’t matter what it takes to achieve it. I found that since most of these horrible crimes against humanity and our Earths well-being are out of sight, so they are out of mind. I do not believe it is one hundred percent the corporations fault, however. We as consumers do not help this situation. I am sure many of us have bought countless things that have been detrimental to either humans or the environment. Most of us are aware of this, but due to the cost and easy of purchasing we do it anyways. I think this is because most of us have not seen the working conditions, or the devastation of the environment first hand, so we are disconnected from it. I think we need to hold these large corporations to better standards, but that will come at a cost for us as well. manufacturing in the US is great for jobs and the economy, but do most people want to be spending a considerable amount of money to purchase items now that are reasonably priced? Probably not. Also, if manufacturing was moved to the US, these third world countries would be without jobs. It is a tricky scenario that needs attention. No one should make maying under a dollar per shirt or per hour of work, no matter where you live. If you cannot afford to feed your family when working more than what full time is considered in the states that is slavery. Corporations are so dominant in North American and Western cultures it is hard to say that they cannot run our world. What would we be without these corporations? I find a lot of people blaming only the corporations for being greedy, but in a sense so is the public. We complain when prices are too high, even though most of us know the person that went into making your item was paid next to nothing. I think corporations provide a lot of jobs and stimulate the economy, which we need. I do not believe however that human lives or the environment should be jeopardized for that. The fact that we all know that this is happening and none of us do anything about it speaks volumes to who we are as a society. Even the CEO’s in the documentary say, they cannot do what they believe in or want to do. They were compared to ‘good slave owners’. They may be nice people, but at the end of the day, they are still slave owners. So all this to say, I think our society and the way we consume things relies on corporations to provide us with the good we need. That being said, there needs to be a major overhaul and overseeing of the businesses, and those involved with the corporations core need to be investigated for their motivations.

2. Is there anything we can do to minimize its negative consequences on the poor of the world?

I believe that we can call for a change of action against these corporations. As stated above, however that would mean higher prices for us to pay on daily items. This would mean that our whole economy would change drastically. It would be great for the corporations to not be as greedy and marking item prices up nearly as much. I think it would be helpful to show the American (and Canadian and European) people the faces of the young people that are creating your Nike sweater. As I said before, everything is very out of sigh tout of mind; but if they put a photo of the worker as well as their wage per hour beside the price you are paying for that shirt, that would cause a lot of people to pause on supporting that business until some real change was seen. I think, just bringing more awareness to the problems that seem so far away would do a lot of good. As far as the environment goes, I think powerful images of the pollution caused by making a certain shirt or whatever item would also go a long way. Additionally, having the amount of water or electricity is used to make a pair of jeans for example would be eye opening for many people. I hope that some day in the future we can come up with a balanced and fair systems for all parties involved.
