GCU How Functional Patterns Help a Nurse Understand the Current and Past State of Health for A Patient Respond to all 3 responses in the order attached.
Original Discussion Question:Discuss how functional patterns help a nurse understand the current and past state of health for a patient. Using a condition or disease associated with an elimination complexity, provide an example.
My discussion answer post: For the case of the functional nursing patterns , they play a vital role in process of helping the nurse develop an understanding of the past and the current state of health for a patient. Notably, it is through the use of the functional patterns that the nurse is able to get a comprehensive analysis of the condition of the patient. In that instance, the nurse can be able to administer care which is based on evidence and also patient-centered. Notably, it is through of functional patterns that the nurse able to conduct a detailed examination and in that case ask the patient questions which bears a huge deal of relevance. In that instance, the nurse will be able to make an informed diagnosis. With such a diagnosis, the nurse will be able to administer the right medication which will be able to treat the patient based on his present and past medical conditions.
Take, for instance, a disease like malaria. In this case, malaria has been associated with elimination complexity(Klepac, Metcalf, McLean, & Hampson, 2013). That being the case, it means that the functional pattern can be effectively utilized tackle this disease. Notably, some of the symptoms that are presented in the case of malaria are also present for other diseases which have not been associated with the elimination complexity. That means that functional patterns will have to be used to determine rule out other ailments in the case of malaria. For instance, a symptom like fever is found in both Malaria and typhoid. That means the functional pattern will have to be usedto eliminate the possibility of typhoid. In that case, the nurse will be able to administer the right kind of medication.

Re: Topic 3 DQ 2
Functional patterns can help nurse understand the
current and past state of a patient’s health. For
example, kidney disease can manifest many symptoms
and has many risk factors. The risk factors include
“preexisting kidney impairment, cardiovascular and
peripheral vascular disease, hypertension, diabetes
mellitus, heart failure, malignancies, and benign
prostatic hypertrophy (Copstead-Kirkhron, 2013). Age
and taking certain medication can predispose a patient
also. Use of nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs
(NSAIDs), angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors
(ACEls), and angiotensin II (All) receptor blockers is
known to interfere with renal vascular autoregulation
and can precipitate prerenal kidney injury in certain
populations of patients (Copstead-Kirkhron, 2013).
Whenever there is a possibility for lack of blood flow to
the kidneys, patients have an increased risk. If a
patient is admitted for sepsis, hemorrhage, receiving IV
contrast or antibiotics, heart failure, nurses need to be
diligent on prevention and assessment. Some of the
symptoms can include decrease urine output. Over time
as fluid accumulates, fluid overload can cause
pulmonary issues like short of breath, pleural effusions,
hypertension, and tachycardia. It may cause nausea,
vomiting, or diarrhea. As toxins increase in the blood
stream, confusion and lethargy can occur. Nurses can
monitor labs and watch for “increased BUN and
creatinine, potassium, and phosphorus and also
decreased calcium, sodium, bicarbonate, and pH
(Grand Canyon, 2018).

Discuss how functional patterns help a nurse
understand the current and past state of health for a
patient. Using a condition or disease associated with an
elimination complexity, provide an example.
Information regarding functional health patterns may
offer greater insight into the patient’s current and past
state of health. Functional health patterns include:
health perception/values, nutrition and metabolic
pattern, sleep/rest pattern, elimination pattern,
activity/exercise pattern, cognitive/perceptual
pattern, sensory/perception – self-concept pattern,
role-relationship pattern, sexuality/reproductive
pattern, and coping. Both the family and patient should
be interviewed regarding these functional health
patterns to reveal any presence or history of illness and
disease which may be associated with an elimination
complexity. Risk factors for an elimination complexity,
such as renal disease include: genetic/family history of
disease, history of alcohol use or abuse, obesity,
smoking, hypertension, This allows the nurse to assess
these risk factors and identify any early identification
or clinical manifestations of disease, utilize
collaborative care for treatment, and recognize any
potential complications in order to restore function of
these systems (Whitney, 2018).

Re: Topic 3 DQ 2
To develop a comprehensive evaluation and assessment
of the contemporary health status of a patient, it will
be vital for a medical nurse to carry out an assessment
of the functional patterns of the patient. To explicate
more on this, when it comes to a medical facility with a
complaint of chest pain and coughing, the nurse ought
to ask the patient concerning the condition of the chest
before the onset of the symptoms to assist the getting
to know the baseline of the patient (Workman, & Phd,
2015). The nurse ought to know the severity, frequency,
and consistency of the condition. There is a need for
the nurse to know if the patient is using medications
that are causing an allergic condition that may be
instigating the coughing which in turn affects the chest.
Chronic renal failure is a medical condition that is
progressive and irreversible which leads to the
dysfunction of the kidney. It is necessary for the nurse
to carry out a comprehensive evaluation and
examination of the patient to understand the functional
patterns and know how serious the condition is and the
extent of the damage that the condition has caused to
the patient. It is also important for the nurse to
determine if the patient is experiencing other medical
problems such as perforation or internal bleeding
(Workman, & Phd, 2015). Through a close assessment of
the patient, it will be easier for the nurse to develop a
clear baseline of the patient and also detect any form
of change in the baseline. Consequently, the patient
can develop the right mitigation measures that will be
used to address the problems.
